How do i find the right counsellor for me?
Finding the right counsellor is about finding someone who you feel comfortable with. Counselling involves talking about feelings, emotions, experiences so you want to be able to build a trusting relationship with that person. Have a look on their website or Counselling Directory profile and whether this person has similar values and approaches to you.
How do you know if you need therapy?
People come to counselling for all different reasons, you may come to therapy because you don't feel like you can discuss your concerns and issues with anyone around you. You may be dealing with some internal struggles and that its affecting your mental health. Or you may have tried resolving things yourself but need outside help. Getting help is always a strong and brave step.
Can I refer myself for counselling?
Yes, most services you can make a self referral for. In private therapy, this is often how individuals get support. Its important that its your choice and not anyone else's, so making the referral yourself is a positive step.
Will my therapist give me advice?
Your therapist will never tell you what to do, however you may have a person centred therapist whom is more passive and may not give alot of input and insight. Or you may have a more directive therapist if your receiving CBT, whom will set tasks and provide structured support. Counselling isn't about telling you what to do, but outlining your choices.
